After many years of successful resistance to the Byzantine Abkhazia was subjugated under emperor Justinian I (527-565) who forcibly converted the many people to Christianity. Justinian's religious policy reflected the imperial conviction that the unity of the Empire unconditionally presupposed unity of faith; and it appeared to him obvious that this faith could be only the Orthodox (Nicaean). Those of a different belief had to recognize that the process of consolidation, which imperial legislation had effected from the time of Constantius II, would now vigorously continue. The Codex contained two statutes which decreed the total destruction of paganism, even in private life; these provisions were zealously enforced. Contemporary sources (John Malalas, Theophanes, John of Ephesus) tell of severe persecutions, even of good people in high position. The Jews were also persecuted under the Byzantines in Abkhazia. Christianity was basically a tool to assure European hegemony and subject other races into accepting a low status position in society.
From the 7th century to today Islam allowed Abkhazians to escape their oppression from the Byzantines, eventually to find an alliance with the Ottoman Empire. As the Ottoman Empire went into decline Abkhazia suffered along with the rest of the world. Abkhazia is descended from Muslims who survived the Muhajiroba (the Georgian inquisition and genocide of Muslims): Prior to the mid-eighteenth century, Christianity co-existed in Abkhazia with Islam and local pagan beliefs under Ottoman rule, however, the Georgians attempted to weaken Muslim position in the region by demolishing Abkhazias mosques and Islam became more widespread as a result, at least until the Muhajiroba of the 1860s when Muslims were driven out of Abkhazia into Turkey with the help of Russian imperial authorities.
In the Soviet era the Georgians were favored by the Russians for insuring their power in the region. George Hewitt, professor of Circassian languages at London University in his 1998 book, The Abkhazians: A Handbook points out: ''The aggressive politics of the government of Georgia towards Abkhazia occasioned extreme displeasure among the local Abkhazian, Armenian, Russian, Greek, and a significant proportion of the Kartvelian peoples, which actually helped to facilitate the establishment of Soviet power in the region on March 4th, 1921.'' He also points out in his book Abkhazia's right as a sovereign nation independent from Georgia: ''Had the Soviet Union collapsed during the first decade of its existence in the 1920s before Abkhazia was reduced in status by fiat of Stalin in February 1931 from being a fully-fledged republic, which entered the Transcaucasian Federation on 13 December 1922 in treaty-alliance with Georgia, to that of an autonomous republic within Georgia, and had the then League of Nations adopted the same principle of recognition later practiced by its successor, the United Nations, then Abkhazia would for decades have enjoyed independence and membership in its own right of the said international community.''
Shortly after the Soviet Union Georgia was run by the Mkhedrioni like Saakashvili who adopted the flag of the crusades and sought to gain favor with the West by launching their own crusades against the Muslims in the region. In 1992 Georgia attempted to ethnically cleanse Abkhazia of its Muslims and non-Muslim supporters but, Abkhazia was saved by the great Muslim fighters of the Confederation of Mountain Peoples of the Caucasus so we honor Dzhokhar Dudayev, Shamil Basayev, Mukhamed Kilba and, Sultan Sosnaliyev. All of whom fought for Abkhazia against impossible odds to attain victory and independence.
