We are from the Treasure Coast of Florida, primarily Fort Pierce and Port Saint Lucie in Saint Lucie County.
Avenue D in Fort Pierce has a long-standing reputation for mostly negative reasons. This is part of our Saint Lucie community, a neighborhood where many of us are growing up and where our friends live.
We want the world to know there are positive things happening on Avenue D. This is why we named our choir for the neighborhood. We are striving to overcome the harsh negatives of this environment, and we are succeeding because of the support of our families, our neighbors and our community.
In return for this support, we are becoming the best sons, brothers, friends, and students today so that we will be the finest husbands, fathers, colleagues, and leaders in the future.
In four short years, under the musical direction of Mrs. Mary Hendricks and the spiritual guidance from Dr. Earl Hendricks, we've been blessed to move from anonymity to being a dynamic group of young men and boys who have performed around south Florida, to the same stage as the visiting Vienna Boys Choir, and to a professional recording session with Grammy winner and now renowned Gospel singer, Bishop Joe Simon, in Chicago. We have performed for community groups, civic clubs, churches and schools. We have been welcomed into exclusive gated neighborhoods and private clubs along the Treasure Coast of Florida, and we're proud to have performed the National Anthem twice for the the New York Mets' opening game in Florida.
Now we have been invited to perform on an international stage as the back-up singers for Bishop Joe Simon in Porretta Terme, Italy in July 2008. Bishop Simon is headlining the 21st annual Porretta Soul Festival and we'll be performing live before thousands of people. The concerts will be simulcast on the web and played live on radio stations around the world. During a layover on our return trip, we'll perform in Paris at Eglise St-Gervais, one of the oldest and most historic churches in Paris.
We've been working hard and performing several times a week since January to raise money to support all our activities and the trip to Italy - all while keeping our grades up - but we have a ways to go to meet our fundraising goals. For the trip to Italy, we're mostly covered when we get there, but we still have to pay for the whole choir and the chaperones to get there.
