Kiwirrkurra - the Kiwirrkurra Flood Recovery Project
Many remote Indigenous communities in Australia are located in areas most at risk of natural disasters. One such remote Western Desert community, Kiwirrkurra, was devastated by a flood in 2001. Within the context of the National Emergency Management Strategy for Remote Indigenous Communities, a project completed by the Attorney-Generals Department, in consultation with the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia, has documented the communitys stories to identify the lessons learned, so that other communities and emergency managers can benefit. The documentary Worrying for Kiwirrkurra was officially launched by the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, in Perth in 2009. For more information, visit http://www.ema.gov.au
