I've always thought the last line was "We could be far worse." Seeing this, I searched lyrics websites. Nearly all of them say "We could be the first." I listened to just that line over and over. I can't hear it. I still hear far worse.

@Devildog8803 I remember that the boys back in elementary school would request our teacher play this song during music class. That was early to mid-90s. I don't know if it came out much longer before that, though.
