We need to frame religious teachings in practical terms: Most religions are against killing, theft, etc - and in favor of compassion, loving thy neighbor and so on. These are wonderful spiritual values - and very practical rules for any society. If we could all accept these simple guidelines - with or without the trappings of religion - the world would be a vastly different place. However, most religions claim an exclusive connection to God, and that's kept the planet in conflict for millennia.
