George Smith made no such discoveries. What he unearthed was some of the background behind Genesis...where it came from, how it was assembled. Smith's discoveries contributed heavily to modern scholars' opinion that Genesis (and in fact, the entire Pentateuch) is a compilation of multiple local legends from that era.
