Adam Curtis posed the question best: What Happened to our Dreams of Freedom?

I'm a historian seeing unprecedented levels of mind control, surveillance and pointless warmongering.

-Why are we photographed on every street when we can be arrested for ten years if we take a photo that MIGHT be of use to a terrorist

-If you are British, did you vote for these cameras? Did you vote to bail out the banks? Did you vote to go to war in Iraq? Did you vote for your taxes to fund the IMF or World Bank? Did you vote to let Israeli airplanes fuel in Britain during their attacks on Lebanon? Did you vote to support Mikhail Saakashvilli's aggression in the Caucuses? Did you vote to become part of an undemocratic continent wide bureaucratic superstate?

-No? But surely you could vote for a mainstream party that opposed these things, couldn't you? We do live in a democracy after all, don't we?

-Why are all the nations of the world turning into a superstate?

-Why was Russia's government praised for destroying its economy, bombing its own parliament and slaughtering its own citizens... then demonised for following democratic reforms? (And why are Brits told that Democracy was 'rolled back' under Putin when the opposite was the case)?

-Why are we told incessantly that we have to be afraid?

-Why are we incessantly pressurised to be 'normal'? Doesn't that mean wearing horrible clothes (shellsuits/emo), listening to horrible music (Robbie Williams), watching horrible TV (Xfactor) and reading horrible newspapers (uhm, all of them)? And doesn't normal primarily mean trusting people you've never met with your freedom?

-And why is it that as 'normal' people get weirder, the state is more interested in arresting 'deviants'?

-Why are drugs illegal, but TV legal? Which has destroyed more minds and nations?

-Why are we told that Christianity is mental illness? Why do all the 'wise' people in our media take the view that it is morally right to kill unborn children?

-Why do we keep hearing that we are a democracy when all our political discussions are occupied by identical people?

I can't answer these questions decisively. But I hope to stay a part of the conversation, and at least offer some resistance to whoever 'they' might be.
