Chain Gang by Sam Cooke back from 1960, is known by most today.
Before spring 1990, I knew the name Sam Cooke and some of his songs, and only this.
In spring 1990 we must say that Berlin was under enormous change. Each day had its story, someone was not to believe, but true.
It was on a spring day in the old East Berlin that it dawned on me that Sam Cooke was something special.
On some stairs at the main railway station in east Berlin, sat a group of soldiers with a ghetto blaster. They sat and listened to Sam Cooke and the Chain Gang.
It was in that second it dawned on me what was happening in Europe, which had been ongoing since autumn 1989.
I was close to tears of joy when they tried to teach me how to pronounce Sam Cooke's name correctly on their own Russian or Eastern European way
After that day, Sam Cooke was one of my big favorites when it comes to music from the 60s

Johnnie & Joe was an American R&B vocal duo from The Bronx.
Johnnie Louise Richardson (1935-1988) and Joe Rivers (1937) began singing together in 1957 and released several singles on Chess Records. Three of the songs hit the U.S. singles charts. "Over the Mountain, Across the Sea" went to #3 on the R&B chart and #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "I'll Be Spinning", went Top 10 R&B, both in 1957. "My Baby's Gone", a #15 R&B hit, was their last, although "Over the Mountain, Across the Sea" returned to the pop charts in 1960, peaking at #89 the second time around.
All of the Chess singles were leased from J&S Records, whom Johnnie & Joe were under contract to.
Johnnie Richardson died of complications from a stroke on October 25, 1988.
