AntiGravity Founder and Artistic Director Christopher Harrison talks about his latest collaboration with New York's Little Orchestra Society at Lincoln Center:
Creating an original work to be performed at Lincoln Center in NYC with a 50 piece orchestra is something I never take for granted. To have that happen in two separate productions in two theaters there in one week has me flying over the moon!
Rossinis Armida opened at the Metropolitan Opera on Monday night and I got to create the first ever original aerial dance segment in their history accompanied by the Met Orchestra! The Little Orchestra Society has been creating concerts for young audiences to introduce them to classical music for many years now. Ive been working with Maestro Dino Anagnost on an original work that Im very proud of.
Athletes, Aerialists & Arpeggios is a full length concert work with seven original AntiGravity numbers in the show. I chose to create a fusion work. The show combines beatboxing with Badinerie, breakdancing to Shostakovich, aerial silks to Waltz from Masquerade, aerial cube to La Cinquantine. It is all original work.
For the production I pulled from a different side of the AntiGravity Roster. Two phenomenal aerial ballerinas Jillian St. Germaine and Francoise Voranger whom I discovered breakdancing in Central Park and their pal Breaker/Beatboxer Omar Thomas from the same street dance team, New York City Tranzformz, are the featured artists. Gavin McNally will play the breakdancing cop. Their choreography is fresh and their talent is superb. These artists are the real deal. On a side note, while they perform with panache it will also be through grief as one of their breaking crew was murdered in a robbery in their hood this week. The performance will be dedicated to him: Durand Gordan. With an angel on their shoulders ⎯- they will fly!
Ziporah Roney is our star athlete. A competitive rhythmic gymnast trained from the ranks of the Wendy Hilliard Foundation, she will perform a solo ribbon routine to the Waltz from Masquerade on the great Avery Fisher Hall stage. Ziporah (20) will join Team AntiGravity again on our tour to Brazil in August.
Our finale will feature 26 kids (champions in the making) from the Wendy Hilliard Foundation ⎯- of which I am proud to be an active and founding board member. We provide free gymnastics training to under-privileged urban kids. This is our 11th year. They will flip, tumble, roll and fly to Rimsky Korsokavs Dance of the Tumblers. Fun!
