Ehteshaam Gulam gives the reasons why the Satanic Verses story about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is false and unreliable. The story of the Satanic Verses is found in Ibn Ishaq pages 165-167, Al-Tabari Volume 4, pages 107-113 and Ibn Sad Volume 1, pages 236-239. HOWEVER None of these sources have fully connected chains of transmission for the story. Ibn Ishaq was condemned by some of our major Islamic scholars (See Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmu' Al Fataawa, Volume, 13, page 345).
Adh-Dhahabi also listed some of the major scholars of Islam who refuted Ibn Is`haq's reliability in Hadith narrations. Imam Malik, for instance, called Ibn Is`haq a liar and Yahya Ibn Sa`eed al-Ansari, as well as, al-A`mash refuted one of Ibn Is`haq's narrations by saying that he lied. As a general statement, Yahya Ibn Sa`eed graded Ibn Ishaq as being weak in Hadith narration. Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal discounted the reliability of Ibn Ishaq if he alone narrates a Hadith. Also, Imams Yahya Ibn Ma`een (in another narration from him), an-Nasaii and ad-Daraqutni stated that Ibn Ishaq was weak in Hadith.
Ibn Sad has even said that the Satanic Verses is false because Al Waqidi (a known liar) reported it to him. For Al Waqidi being a liar see Mizan al-I`tidal (3:662-666 #7993) and Ibn Sad Volume 1 page 205.
Al Tabari WARNS people that his books contain both authentic and unauthentic (false) stories about the Prophet Muhammad (See Al Tabari, Volume 1, page 13).
The following Islamic scholars have declared that the Satanic Verses is false:
Ibn Kathir said; 'All the links of this Tradition are unauthentic and I have found no correct version of this with continuous links.' (Ibn Kathir in his Tafsir Volume 5 pages 441-442)
Ibn Hajar vol. 8 page 439 gives the reason why the Satanic verses is weak/false.
Shaukani says, 'There is nothing true in it and none of its links is proved.' (Fath al-Qadeer Volume 5 page 128)
Ibn Jawzi says: 'This (The Satanic Verses story) is not correct.' (Zaad al-Muyassar Volume 4 page 391)
When Ibn Khuzaimah was asked about it, he said, "This story has been invented by heretics". (Tafsir al-Raazi Volume 11 page 134)
Baihaqi said; "This story has not been proved to be correct by the rules of reporting". (Tafsir a-Raazi Volume11 page 135)
Qazi `Ayad says, "The very fact that this tradition is neither contained in any of the authentic collections of Hadith nor has it been related in an authentic way by authentic reporters shows its weakness". (Al-Shifa Volume 2 page 125)
Besides them, Imam Razi (in his Tafsir Volume 11 page 135), Qazi Abu Bakr Ibn al-`Arabi (Al-Shifa Volume 2 page 126), Alusi (in his Tafsir Volume 13 page 99) etc. have rejected it altogether.
Imam Razi in his commentary stated that the hadith scholars have declared this story to be weak and that when Ibn Khuzayma was asked regarding this story, he declared it to be forged from heretics. He also mentions that Imam Al Bayhaqi stated that this story was not narrated reliably and that the narrators have been condemned by hadith scholars. (Fakhar ad-Din ar-Razi, Tafsir Al Kabir, Commentary on Surah 22:52)
Ibn Hazm also declared the Satanic verses story as a forgery and that there is no reliable chain of transmission for it. (Ibn Hazm, Al Fasl Filmalal, Volume 2 pages 308-309, 311).
CONCLUSION: The Satanic Verses is a FALSE/FICTIONAL story attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). I've listed SEVERAL Islamic scholars who have refuted the story and have proved that there is no fully connected chain of transmitters to authenticate the story. The chains regarding the story are broken and there are missing people in the chain. Some missionaries might reply back and say that there are 30 independent testimonies narrating the event. But again, we don't know the people in the missing links. For all we know it can be the same person that is missing in all the broken chains. If that is the case, then this wouldn't make all these narrations truly independent. 30 FALSE WITNESSES ARE STILL 30 FALSE WITNESSES.
Christians and other critics of Islam should STOP using the Satanic Verses, because there is no proof or evidence for it.
