Let me add that precisely because she was an American, had not studied abroad, her acceptance was actually made more difficult. Havin Caruso onher side certainly helped, but SHE had to prove herself; he couldn't sing for her after all.

Rosa Ponselle will never know "Goodbye Forever."

Compared to Ponselle, this is like watching an understudy -- this is a classy voice (at least parts of it), but there is simply no comparison to Ponselle. At least not inthis rendition.

I'm not asking for Ponselle every time; I am asking for RESPECT and a voice that can can carry it off with the force and beauty it requires. Absolutely gorgeous! Ponselle had no equal. Period!

So sad when a real legend (not some facsimile) dies. I loved her all my life and miss her so! I have a treasured, but heart wrenching note from her saying the doctors thought they got all her cancer out. Not to be. Mary Martin was the epitome of "great." Today? Medocre is the new great. Thank God...

There's only one Mary Martin and absolutley no one today comes close.

Sorry, Chris. I myself heard Sutherland and Horne in "Norma" in the 70's. Marilyn Horne outsang her, outvoiced her all the way. Bad night? Nope -- it was more than that. She was great, but NO Ponselle.
