Welcome and thank you for visiting my tribute channel to Andy Irvine, with Playlists showcasing Andy's remarkable talent, whether as a soloist or as part of a wide range of collaborations.

There are currently so many video clips featuring Andy, on YouTube, that I thought it would be useful to assemble them selectively in some organised structure.

If you wish to help and assist, then you are very welcome to join me and participate in this labour of love and friendship.

I shall be assuming that, like me, all of Andy's fans visiting this channel will wish to support him by purchasing his music via his official releases, or by attending the many concerts at which he continues to perform with such indefatigable commitment, good humour, wit and—of course—outstanding musicianship.

Here are a few helpful links:

Andy Irvine's official website:
http://www.andyirvine.com/

[The design of this channel was inspired by Kumiko Hirata's design for Andy's latest album to date: 'Abocurragh'.]
About Me:

As an admirer of Andy Irvine's accomplished musicianship since the early days of Planxty, I have never ceased to marvel at his many talents.

I find it extraordinary that he developed, on his own, such a brilliant and completely new method of playing the mandolin family of instruments which now includes, of course, the so-called 'Irish bouzouki'.

If you watch the clip of 'Empty-Handed' which autoplays on this page, for example, you can very clearly see how his straight 'up-and-down' plectrum technique adds a quasi-metronomic rhythm which also serves to deconstruct selected notes in his chords while his left hand links them to each other with short but immensely effective contrapuntal runs and other skillful embellishments. The resulting sound is musically luminous and, when played at high speed—like on a Bulgarian 'horo'—often causes the proverbial sparks to fly from the stage and into the audience!

As we all know, Andy also excels at playing the harmonica and the hurdy gurdy, both self-taught after an initial grounding in classical guitar during his teenage years.

Andy's very personal approach to playing these instruments comes hand-in-hand with his unique sensitivity in accompanying and re-interpreting traditional songs which he collected from various sources, such as the equally magnificent Child Ballads and Sam Henry's 'Songs of the People', among so many others.

Then, as a singer-songwriter, it was only natural that Andy would develop his craft as an extension of the various traditions he had absorbed along the way, from Ol' Timey music to Woody Guthrie, plus the aforementioned Irish, Scottish & English traditional songs. (Not forgetting, to be sure, that breathtaking Bulgarian traditional music which he decided we should all discover along with him!)

To this day, I remain deeply inspired by Andy's musicianship, which is attested to by the many video clips included at this channel.

I am delighted to acknowledge fully the contribution made by all those of you who already uploaded so many video clips of Andy in performance, and my grateful thanks go to each of you for enabling me simply to bring them all together within the organised structure of this channel.

I therefore hope that you will all join me in delighting in—as well as celebrating—Andy's extraordinary talent, exemplified in so many different ways thanks to all our shared, collective video clips.

Thank you!
With kind regards;
Patrick. ;-))

Dear Malcolm, :-))
Thank you very much for your helpful pointer. I had hoped to find at least one video clip when I signed in late this afternoon and I was delighted to discover that 'MrCatstail' had done the honours, once again! Your kind comment was an extra bonus (in the non-banking sense), Malcolm, and it's always good to hear from you.
How's your practice coming along these days? I am STILL learning Andy's renditions of 'Sweet Bann Water', 'Kellswater' and 'Edward Connors'... very slowly! ;-)
Please keep well and joyful;
With kind regards; :-)))
