About Me:
There are twelve Crcassian tribes : Abzakh, Bjedough, Shapsugh, Kabartey, Natukhai, Hatuqai, Besleney, Ubykh, Chamgui, Yejerquai, Makhosh, Mamkhej.
I am from the Shapsugh tribe.
A Circassian warrior will spring front his saddle to the earth, plunge his dagger into the breast of the horse of his enemy, again vault into the saddle; then stand erect, strike his adversary, or hit a mark, almost at a hairs breadth, with his light gun: and all this while his horse is proceeding at full gallop. — Edmund Spencer
One night, while they (Tatars) were in deep slumber induced by the strong drink, the Circassians rolled heavy stones on the tents below, and fell on the Khans camp, massacring a great number of his men and putting the rest to flight. The Khan lost a brother and son. Thenceforth, the Kabardians were rid of the Tatars forever.
Shapsughs took very active part in the Caucasian war. They had a reputation of invincible people and were the last to lay down their weapons under the pressure of tsarist troops in 1864. Some of Shapsoug troops still fought up to 80s in the 19th century.
This is what was said by the Russian officer A. Bestuzhev-Marlinskiy exiled by Russia to Caucasus: "... I saw many mountaineers in the battle, but should confess that never saw anyone better than Shapsoughs. They learned to the highest degree how to make as much harm as possible while avoiding it to their best. Their nobles are hopelessly brave; but there is one problem: they have no coordination in their actions."
General Rayevskiy, who commanded at that time at the Black Sea coastline, attempted to explain to Shapsougs Thamadas (chiefs), who came to inquire about the reasons of military actions on their territory, the right of Russia on their territories:
- Sultan gave you to us as pesh-kesh, which is, gave you as a present to Russian tsar, said the general.
- I understand! answered Shapsug's Thamada and showed him the bird, on the tree: General, I too, give to you this bird, take it if you can!
Allegedly, these words put an end to the negotiations.
F.F. Turanau, who served in caucasus several years witnesses about excellent seaworhty qualities of Circassian galleys. The traveller J.Tebu de Marini describes the Circassian vessel in this way : "their ship, as all I saw before was flat-bottomed, without kneel, casing was fixed to the very fine ship frame by nails and wodden pins. On the nose was image of animal's head. It was hard to figure out what animal that was exactly, but Circassians asserted that it was a head of the he-goat..." the oars on their galleys are very short and fixed to rowlocks of enormous lenth with the transverse cross-bars for the hand of rowers. They used rudder and small square sail".
In the October of 1836 year Tsar's vessel "Nartsiss" was attacked near to mouth of Sochi river by 7 Circassian galleys. After, the commander of Russian vessel captain Varnitskiy reported that Circassians fought in organized manner, their commander was showing by long pole to each galley its place during the attack. After fierce fight the Russians escaped.
"The Circassian warrior is seldom seen in the streets of Tiflis, and is immediately distinguished in the crowd by his knightly form, the noble profile of his countenance whos expression speaks many boldness and energy... With a firm haught step, the Circassian stalks through the crowd, and all, including the drunken Cossack makes way for him." (English traveller in Circassia)

Napoleon Bonaparte about Circassian cavalry : "If I had the French infantry and the Circassian cavalry, I could have conquered the whole world".
Circassian saying : To be a man, and to be dead is the same.
Johann Friedrich Blumenbach theorised that the Circassians were the closest to God's original model of humanity, and thus "the purest and most beautiful whites were the Circassians". This fuelled the idea of female Circassian beauty.
