I heard him for the first time when I was 12. I noticed that my father was electrificed, he compared his album with Placido´s. But, my favorite music was totally different. About 14, I really listened to his Che gelida manina and the Tosca record and something in his singing touched my soul. I started singing for myself -the songs of Elvis and it developed. But I also had to see, that Franco´s singing is impossible to achieve. My first opera with him was AIDA in Hamburg when I was 18. Wow, he on stage! And the ordiance loved him, too. Afterwards, he gave autographs, so that I coudl look him in the eye. From that time on, I was a fan. And one could say, that he also became a member of the family. My parents went to Berlin, Vienna, Frankfurt, Verona to see him. He was always friendly and after the performances he often had a beer with us in a restaurant, of course not at the same table. When he stopped singing, we were all sad, noone knew why. Nine years later, he returned and told us that he lost his wife Sally and he had decided to stay with her during her illness.
His comeback on stage was in 1999 in Vienna and all "friends" came and it felt like he never was away. After his concert, I phoned him, told him who I was and so on and we became related. My Idea was to bring him back to Germany and so I thought about concerts in Hamburg or Munich. It was difficult, I had a regular job, I had a family. So, I found out, that it would be easier to start with a cd and the idea of "My Way" was born. In July we spent a weekend in his house in Roma, where we had a great time, by the way: I tried to teach him the German lyrics of "In fernem Lande" which he performed in October. Because I had the possibility to re-release his first record on cd, the "Opern-Gala" came out. New Year´s Eve he met Agnieszka in Poland and fell in love very intensively, never saw him so happy and in May they married. His comeback in Germany took place in 2001 in Bamberg and although his voice was ill, he gave everything and it was successfull: You can listen to two pieces from that evening on youtube. We returned to the idea of a concert in Munich and because I lost many colleagues in the WTC, I was motivated too, to do it for the benefit of our foundation. But I had to see that something in his behavior had changed but I couldn´t imagine, that he was really ill at that time. Two evenings before our concert in Munich it was clear for me, that something was wrong but we coud not stop what we have started. We had the offer for the greatest opera-performance of all times in our hands: Turandot in Peking. And the man from china was there... But the catastrohe happened. Behind the stage, we tried our best to calm him but it was impossible. We had a big fight and it was clear that all our plans for Peking, Verona, Vienna, Hamburg...were gone with the wind. Our relation was damaged and as the organizer I lost my investment too. Hard time for my ex-wife she never forgave me that...Franco´s brain cancer was not operable - too late, too big and too complicated. He was always such a strong and healthy man...unbelievable. He had only 16 months left. And because of the fast development I could not come to see him for the last time. Agnieszka stayed with him til the end.
He found his peace in Monte-Carlo. But he is not dead - he is away and somewhere else. The wounds are healed and he would say: O sole mio! We continue and finally I met the love who light up my life. Ciao!
