This beautiful arrangement of a very old and favored hymn, now commonly used for Christmas, was created for the acoustic guitar by David Walbert, my esteemed friend, colleague and teacher. When I first heard David's arrangement of this piece, I was immediately struck with it. I made a handwritten tablature transcription of it from an old copy of the original handwritten tablature of David's. It is available in .pdf format as a free download on my website ( http://www.derekpatton.com ) under "Sheet Music/Tabs" and is played in standard tuning. I take responsibility for any errors in the tab (as well as in the video!). This is David's arrangement of this classic piece as he plays and recorded it. We hope to have a typeset version of both the tablature and music available soon. Three of David's original compositions are featured in "Mel Bay's Master Anthology of New Classic Guitar Solos." David continues to teach, and is available for private lessons, in Birmingham, Alabama. Thank you, David, for sharing this one!

While working on this piece someone remarked, "I think that piece has more transitional forms in it than the fossil record!" As my wife was reading a book on evolution at the time, the title Darwin's Dilemma came to mind. While I have no bone to pick with my evolutionist friends (gratuitous pun), :-) or my theistic evolutionist friends, for that matter, I am a creationist, and see intelligent design everywhere in nature. When I tell people this, they usually laugh and ask to see my Flat Earth Society Membership Card. Nevertheless, it is much easier for me to conceive of human beings coexisting with dinosaurs than it is for me to believe that we are the progeny of apes.

This is an original composition for acoustic fingerstyle guitar. I took two years of college Spanish and decided to put it to some use! I wrote this piece in December of 2006. People frequently ask where the titles and inspiration come from for my music. So, I give this description here, not for the moral reference, but to connect the drama in the music to the pictured scene that was running through my mind when I wrote it. The feelings and imagery occurring to me as I wrote this piece focused on the events surrounding the decision being made and the order given to arrest Jesus, up to His actual arrest in the Garden, and Him subsequently being led out of the Garden into the darkness of the night; His disciples all having abandoned Him. This piece was an "obsessive-compulsive" type of write for me, since I couldn't stop playing it after I finished it. As I played it over and over, it's underlying theme constantly ran through my mind; the piece being a very emotional piece for me to both compose, play, and record.

About Me: I started playing a plastic ukulele at the age of six. During my teens, I had the good fortune of meeting classical guitarist, composer, and recording artist, David Walbert, with whom I began the serious study of classical guitar. After years of teaching guitar myself and performing in various ensembles, a duo, and as a solo artist, I became frustrated with the music scene and left for many years to pursue other interests.

Years later, my passion was rekindled after watching a barefoot, steel-stringed, fingerstyle guitarist (Michael Chapdelaine) play to an enthralled group of admirers. Passion merged with conviction, as awaking in the night several months later, I became focused on the parable of the talents (Mt. 25:14-30) and emerged with an inescapable sense of having buried my musical abilities. I return now to write original compositions for steel-string fingerstyle acoustic guitar, duly chastened and with shoes on.
