I think You Tube is a constructive way to kill time. Before I got involved my only impression was what I would see on TV when a cable show would feature "viral videos." Once I started searching I discoverd the geeks like me who are obsessive-compulsive about certain instruments and sounds. It was a eureka moment - other people with the same chemical imbalance as I have! We are not alone!
About Me:

I have been interested in noise, rhythm, and randomness since I was a kid. I remember sitting in the back seat of our car as we waited for the light to change so my father could make a left turn. Everything was quiet except for the quarter-note click of the turn signal. A woman was crossing the street right in front of us and I noticed her steps were perfectly synchronized with the "click." It was the coolest thing. I realized there was no way she could hear the turn signal...but it was as though some force was syncing them together. Every step was exactly matched to the turn signal metronome. The pedestrian thought she was just walking as she normally would. She had no idea that somehow she was connected to some sort of "cosmic rhythm machine."

Years later I applied the same idea to what I believed to be random noise and sound events. Maybe it just seems to be random because we are unable to hear the "master clock." However, I think if we open our minds we can actually "feel" that master clock. Everyone hears and feels it to some degree...many just don't know how to interpret it. That's where musicians come in. We try to recreate what we are hearing. If someone likes what you have produced they will respond with "Now that's good music!" What they are really telling you is that subconsciously they are hearing the same thing as you. You have produced something that is familiar in some way and have just articulated it for them...you have validated certain feelings and emotions and that makes them feel more connected to their Universe. Even if a listener hears a musical "truth" but doesn't recognize it the natural response is to say "that sucks!" The listener believes he is making a conscious judgment. Its really that his clock is not in sync with that particular combination of vibrations at that moment in time. But that can change. Have you ever pulled out an old album or CD that was once a favorite and listen to it and go: "What the hell was I thinking? This is lame!" Its just that you are no longer in sync with that particular combination of vibrations. The same thing can happen in reverse. Something you used to dislike will now produce a "Oh! now I get it!" Perhaps we're linked to a Universal Low Frequency Oscillator that shifts us in and out of certain interpretations. What scares me is I actually believe this bullshit I'm writing. But truthfully, that's how I feel. At least today anyway.

I would love to see more videos combining guitar with synth stuff. Do you have the tools to use a guitar to trigger actual pitches on a synth? Or perhaps using a hexaphonic pickup, you could have some strings triggering pitches, while others trigger gates/envelopes/LFO rate, etc. Could get pretty wild.

Hey, I love your vid's! Since 8 months or so, Ive developed an enormous interest in synthesizer sounds and "randomness" as you call it. I have had more or less the same experiences as a kid as you with random rhythms or random sounds. When I'm listening to a song on my I-pod, and a car passes by in the rhythm of the music, or when I hear birds singin a beautiful melody to a slow piece of music, I get very excited. I can really identify myself with your story about the master clock and the vibrations in the universe when you listen to music. After reading your story, I think I will have a whole different approach to music.

Sorry for this enormous story about myself, but Im just very glad to see that Im not the only one!

Cheers!

I've been leaving a myriad of comments on your "things". I stumbled upon some of your videos today, and they are great. I just read your profile information and I found it interesting, as I often find myself listening to the sounds all around me and evaluating their musical qualities, imagining them looped and distorted and used in some kind of arrangement that I doubt most people would consider music. My definition of music, however, encompasses many sonic textures that I find interesting.

Sometimes I mention things to other people about how cool a certain sound is, or how it would be cool to use in a song. Most of the time, they didn't even notice the sound that I was talking about.

I always enjoy meeting people that share my "affliction"! If I am ever in your area, wherever that is, I hope that I happen to run into you.

Have you ever considered doing a video tour of all your gear? I think it would go down really well.
