About this user
I'm from the south of Scotland, value humour and integrity, like relaxed and contented company, and adore live participation music and dance, especially when it gets a little wild and improvised.
Hobbies : family, friends and events which bring people together, for example through dancing, balkan and irish sessions, or as a dance caller and musician.
Though sounds grab me far more than the technicalities of instrumentation, for Balkan music and dance, I play darabukka, chromatic (B system) accordion, mandoline, classically-tuned guitar and concertina, and am working on the introduction of DADGAD-tuned guitar (it's also modal music, after all..).
For Irish and Scottish music (basically at a once-a-month session), I play some whistle, concertina and darabukka (the latter mainly to accompany songs).
All were self-learned, starting with guitar, and landing most recently with accordion and concertina. Now well over 50, I probably started the last two too late to get anywhere really interesting.
My favourite craic, however, will always be dancing. As caller with "Toe for Toe" (Switzerland's perhaps best-known Irish / Scottish Ceili band), there is seldom a shortage of hooley.
Successes : no car, no TV.
Failings : too many to list.
Compromises : telecomms management. Better the devil you know...
An Teallach (The Forge) is, in contrast, a wild and fairly imposing mountain in the north-west of Scotland and lies (so to say) at the threshold to what coastal beauty and serenity has not yet been destroyed by the influx of holiday home, yacht and 4WD owners - and their sprawl.
