Xone:K2 - Application Example: Dual Setup - External Mixer [Text to accompany video Tutorial]
You can use two K2s to route the output from 4 separate virtual decks into 4 channels of an external mixer.
This means you can use the two K2s to control your chosen dj software and also use the features of an external mixer.
****Please note, for all DUAL K2 setups: Your Xone:K2's must transmit on different MIDI channels to each other to avoid MIDI conflicts. By default the Xone:K2 transmits on MIDI channel 15, so set one of the K2's to any MIDI channel other than 15. MIDI Channel Tutorial: http://www.youtub...
Start by using a 3.5 millimetre jack to Dual RCA Phono lead to connect the headphone output from the left K2 - to channel 1 of the mixer.
Using a Dual RCA Phono lead, connect the Audio out RCA connectors from the left K2 - to channel 2 of the mixer.
Connect the left K2 to your PC or Mac with the USB cable provided.
Now, use another 3.5 millimetre jack to Dual RCA Phono lead, to connect the headphone output from the right K2 - to channel 3 of the mixer.
Use another dual Dual RCA Phono lead to connect the Audio out RCA connectors from the right K2 - to channel 4 of the mixer.
Connect the right K2 to your PC or Mac with the USB cable provided.
As we want to use the soundcard on each K2, they must both be connected by USB.
Your application can only see one audio device at a time and so the two K2's need to be joined in software.
In the case of a PC -- you will need to use a third party application to achieve this.
In the case of a Mac -- you can use the aggregate device system.
****Aggregate Device Setup (Mac):
In Audio Devices you will have two K2's listed.
Click on the plus icon to Create Aggregate Device.
Now click on both Xone:K2's listed.
The aggregate device now states zero in input channels, and 8 out channels.
****Traktor Pro (Mac) Setup:
From the preferences window in Traktor, click on Audio setup -- and select audio device.
Choose Aggregate Device from the list.
Now set your Output routing.
Make sure your mixing mode is on External.
Set output decks ABCD to: Deck A L 1: Aggregate Device Out 0 Deck A R 2: Aggregate Device Out 1 Deck B L 3: Aggregate Device Out 2 Deck B R 4: Aggregate Device Out 3 Deck C L 1: Aggregate Device Out 4 Deck C R 2: Aggregate Device Out 5 Deck D L 3: Aggregate Device Out 6 Deck D R 4: Aggregate Device Out 7
**** Ableton (Mac) Setup:
From the preferences window in Ableton, select audio and make sure the audio output device is set to Aggregate Device (0 inputs, 8 outputs)
Now set your Output Config.
Make sure: 1/2 stereo 3-4 stereo 5-6 stereo And 7/8 stereo are enabled. Choose OK.
On Channel 1 set the "audio to" section to EXT. Out. Choose 1/2.
On Channel2 set the "audio to" section to EXT. Out. Choose 3/4.
On Channel 3 set the "audio to" section to EXT. Out. Choose 5/6.
On Channel 4 set the "audio to" section to EXT. Out. Choose 7/8.

As the K2 is bus powered - it is ideal for mixing on the move.
But it is also possible to run two K2's - using only one USB port on your computer.
You can do this by connecting the two K2's together via X:LINK.
This will give you twice the control - without using two USB ports on your computer.
For example: Complete 4 deck control, additional sampler control or 8 channels of control per layer in Ableton.
The two Xone:K2 units will be daisy chained together.
Starting from the K2 at the end of the chain, connect the X:LINK out socket, to the X:LINK in socket on the other K2.
Next connect the USB cable to the K2, that has X:LINK in connected.
All audio connections will be made to the K2 that has the USB lead connected.
Use the Audio out RCA connectors on the rear of the K2, to connect to powered speakers or an amplifier.
Plug your headphones into the K2 using the 3.5 millimetre socket at the front of the unit.
In your chosen software application set your monitor or headphone output to soundcard outputs 1 and 2.
This will route the cue bus to your headphones.
Route your mix output to soundcard outputs 3 and 4. This will route the mix output to your speakers.
