If you watch his right hand closely at 1:17 you can see that he starts each group with a downstroke. That means you need to play two downstrokes together which requires you to skip a string to begin the next group (d,u,d,u,d - d,u,d,u,d ...). I'm trying it this way, but also with economy type pic...
