Alfie Boe has longed to make this album. Taking us back to yesteryear this collection of traditional, mainly Italian folk songs has stood up to the test of time and has served to celebrate the raw beauty and the passion of the Mediterranean through the generations.

"The songs featured on the album have been passed through many generations. They are songs of the street musician, the cantautore and the social protester. They are instinctive songs about loves lost and won, about grief and about the agony of leaving home-- 'per la gente' -- written by the people for the people," Alfie explains.

The album features some of the most famous examples of this genre such as 'O Sole Mio', 'Funiculi Funicula', 'Santa Lucia' and 'Torna a Surriento' but also explores some lesser known arias such as the wistful 'Feneste Che Lucive' and the intense and beautiful 'Passione'. Then there is 'Caruso', written in recent years by Lucio Dalle; at its heart is the story of one of Naples' most famous sons and the haunting lyrics and soaring melody are redolent of the Neapolitan classic 'Dicitancell vuje'.

Alfie continues, "Some of these songs were probably, subconsciously, my first experiences of ever hearing classical music. I first heard 'Santa Lucia' when I was about 5 years old, running for the ice-cream van back home in Fleetwood." Alfie continues "This music is universal. It is part of the roots of classical music with songs dating back from when classical music began. It is sung in the most glamorous of opera houses and on the most ordinary of street corners."

Alfie's musical team have created an authentic sound that pays homage to the writers of these classic works. Recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and using traditional Italian musicians they've produced an evocative slice of modern/vintage Italian folk music. The album has been co-produced by Chris Porter, best known for his work with artists including George Michael and Take That and Matteo Saggaese, who was first seduced by the music of Naples at age 15 whilst studying piano at the Italian Conservatory. Saggaese adds, "A song always needs a voice to bring it to life and we were privileged to have one of the finest contemporary tenors in the shape of Alfie Boe to grace the work. Alfie has had a long love affair with these songs and a passion to record them."

When Alfie began his studies at the Royal College of Music as an opera singer he was encouraged to explore this beautiful classical folk music. As he immersed himself in the history of these arias he was immediately hooked on the tradition it was steeped in -- his love affair had begun! "When I'm performing these songs it's the music and the words that are telling the story and that's where the passion comes from. I really connect with the people and their love and emotion for their homeland," explains Alfie.

Alfie's trajectory was set when he left home to join the D'Oyly Carte Touring Opera Company. It was a fine experience but it wasn't enough for the young Boe. He wanted to learn his art thoroughly and left for London enrolling at the Royal College of Music. After graduating he joined the The National Opera Studio and then went on to the Villar Young Artists Programme at The Royal Opera House.

It has been well documented that Alfie's first break came when Baz Luhrmann, after spending two years looking for one of the main leads for his controversial production of Puccini's 'La Boheme' approached Alfie for the role. His performance on Broadway led to him winning a Tony Award which sits comfortably next to his John McCormack Young Voice Award and Lyric Tenor of the World Audience Award.

There have been many highlights in his career but the last 12 months have been exceptional. Alfie has enjoyed two chart topping classical albums and now finds himself on the eve of releasing his third studio album; he was nominated for a Classical Brit Award for 'Best Album' sharing the category with Sir Paul McCartney and Sting; he's toured the length and breadth of the country; performed at the Royal Albert Hall with Lesley Garratt and Sir Willard White; performed in a sell-out run of the English National Opera's production of Kismet alongside Michael Ball and performed at Clarence House where he graciously accepted the role as Ambassador for HRH's Arts & Kids Foundation.
