The term transgender includes this broad range of people who all experience atypical gender identity development but the way they express their gender roles may vary widely. Some need to express an alternative gender role only occasionally. A relatively small number of others experience transsexualism, which is the overwhelming need to transition to live permanently in the role that conforms to their innate gender identities. The frequency with which these people occur in the British population is discussed in a separate section of the website. Although terminology is not always used consistently by transgendered people, GIRES uses the term "trans" to describe those who are undergoing or have undergone transition. An individual transitioning from the male to the female role would thus be a trans woman, and one transitioning from female to male role would be a trans man. After transition, many of these individuals prefer to be and, therefore, should be, regarded simply as men and women.

Elizabeth's Story

Hi, I'm Elizabeth Rex, but I like to be known just as "Elizabeth" by everyone, now that I live and work fully as a man. It had all been, and would continue to be "my secret" up until quite recently.
Why it took so long for me to "come out" I do not really know, nut it should have happened before my teens. Perhaps it was due to being born, and living in a Royal Navy family in the sixties and seventies, when boys were meant to be just that, and indeed girls acting like girls. When I asked my Mum if I could go to school in shorts at the age of five, and then continued to try my dads clothes on until I was eleven, when I seriously started to cross dress, I did not even understand myself my sexuality.

Heather's Story

For the majority of my life, I have been denied what I realised I really was, and really am, a female forced into adopting the male role in life.
Can anyone really understand the turmoil within myself knowing I could not fulfil my desires and hopes, having instead to play at what those around me expected me to do. Indeed, I took on that mantle, doing all the "Macho" things. What could be more macho than a fire fighter?
But all this time, my inner self knew I was being untrue to myself, and those around me. I crossed-dressed whenever I could, but kept my secret securely hidden.
All this changed 3 years ago when I found myself alone with no particular wish for a further relationship. All barriers to my cross-dressing were removed and I could now dress in the role I felt I belonged to.
I found myself to be a more relaxed and contented person. There was,(and never was) anything sexual for my need to cross-dress, it was purely how I felt and what was right for me.

Mikki's Story

Commenced a course of full gender treatment at the Albany Clinic only a few months ago, but is already delighted with the care and concern she receives. She says she always knew she was 'different', but it was after her marriage and children that the full realisation dawned of her Transexual needs. Her own GP was sympathetic but unable to help. She says the Albany Clinic was the obvious choice because of its professional, ethical reputation.
Mikki now lives full time in her female role and anticipates surgery in the not too distant future.
