West Alabama Freethought Association
Freethought describes an individual that has arrived at a conclusion about religion without the use of dogma, religious doctrine, or under the pressures of clergy. People often think that Freethought is synonymous with Atheism, but that is not always the case.
That thought process of Freethought leads individuals to any number of societal labels that fall under the umbrella term of Freethought. Some of those labels are (in alphabetical order): Agnostic, atheist, Bright, Humanist, naturalist, materialist, non-theist, secularist, skeptic, Universist, and others.
Some theists refer to us as infidels, heretics, or heathens. These words are meant to be derogatory, but most Freethinkers brush them aside and some Freethinkers refer to themselves as such with a grin.
In addition, there are non-theistic religionists (Buddhists, Taoists, etc.) whose members would feel comfortable at a Freethought meeting. There are also some theistic individuals that have felt comfortable at Freethought meetings, such as Deists and Pantheists. While some liberal members of mainstream religions may feel comfortable at a Freethought meeting, it is obvious that Fundamentalists and Literalists would probably be very uncomfortable at a Freethinker's meeting.
WAFA meetings are open dialog. Please visit our meetup website link listed above for information about our next gathering of freethinkers, and come and join us for great food, great beer and fun conversation!
