The ornamentation is part of the style. How much to use is a matter of the singer and director's imagination, I suppose. I think hers is actually pretty tasteful - but no arguing over taste!

@midnightrose414 She could be called either a soprano with some epic low notes, or a mezzo who can sing very high; but mostly she is considered a mezzo because of her rich color and the ease of her low register. Either way -- she is AWESOME. :)

Oh, this is gorgeous!!! Her trill at "suspirat cor" in the slow movement is sheer glory, and her runs are so smooth and accurate. Bravissima! And of course Ton Koopman's conducting is wonderful.

The lyricism of the solo at the end is just melting. And the choir's blend and warm tone are beautiful!! Thank you for posting!

On the contrary, it is only in believing in God that the deepest beauty of this music shows. At the very least, even had he not believed in God (which he did!) Handel could not have written Messiah without the words, which are all about Christ. Since he did believe in what he was setting to music...

@tpbanks Excellent question....considering that singers are actually supposed to be expressing and acting words! No reason a choir should be singing "exceeding glad" and looking like they're ready to die! I love their expression - it adds feeling to the already glorious music without being at all...

@Mr4stringman Nothing wrong with applause at a recorded concert, as long as the audience waits for the conductor to drop his hands, which is the tacit signal that it's okay to clap. After all, as Khagar says they have worked hard to make this music... it would be silly and rude not to show apprec...

It is, nonetheless. The score was quite recently discovered -- in 2001, I believe, and Emma Kirkby made the first recording of it shortly afterward. It is absolutely awesome... :)

@silvr94 The top note in this aria is an E -- the repeated notes in that very last run are E6, not G6. But, regardless of which it was, she'd sing it just as easily! Natalie Dessay is awesome :)

The purity of that first B-flat gave me chills! So awesome! What a beautiful voice... I am definitely going to look up more from this singer.

What a beautiful clear tone! Like a silver bell. And I like that she ornaments the end of the B section without going too crazy -- understated and elegant, and so pretty!

Really, the air is just about Xerxes' favorite tree: "Never was there a shade of a tree more beloved and lovable, or more sweet." How could such a simple remark become such a celestially beautiful aria? Takes a genius like Handel! And having such a voice as Larmore's to interpret helps too :)

@3NUNS I believe enough not to be presumptuous. I believe that Christ died for us, but I also know that if I say "okay, I believe, that's enough" and ignore Him otherwise, I am not liable to make it to heaven. So I keep fighting the good fight. Believing is only part of it.
