Buds and Blooms and Afri-Can

Buds and Blooms is a fashion design label with one purpose - to spread happiness and success by making things beautiful. A large proportion of the profits fund our development work in Ghana, West Africa, through 'The Afri-Can Connection'.

We welcome everyone who is interested in Africa, the environment, MDG's, equal access to higher education and reducing poverty.

The Afri-Can Connection is a council of young social and technical developers which is concerned with post-secondary education for children in rural West African communities. We strive to achieve these goals by providing financial assistance and expertise to local community leaders and visionaries in order for them to implement their innovative and cutting-edge ideas.

Our council consists of University graduates from both Canada and Ghana who are socially progressive and interested in a broad range of subjects from the sciences to the arts.

We are currently working in Ghana but we want this group to be a place to discuss large scale projects all over the continent. You are encouraged to join, discuss and act! The Afri-Can Connection is a Canadian incorporated non-profit organization which works with Ghanaian rural and peri-urban community based organizations to assist disadvantaged members of those communities.

Previous Projects:

i) Financial support for the Manye Academy, Kpone Barrier, Ghana. This included improving the existing school structures with the addition of walls, doors, solar lighting, desks, chairs.

ii) Financial support for the teaching staff so that Manye was able to retain employees and pay wages.

iii) Nutritional surveys of rural northern communities (specifically Larabanga, outside Mole National Park in Ghana) performed by qualified analysts.

iv) Geological survey for the construction of a borehole well in the community of Larabanga.

v) The construction of a project office in Larabanga.

vi) Uniforms for approximately 250 primary school students in the community of Larabanga.

vii) University tuition and residence/living fees for 7 post-secondary students from the community of Larabanga.

viii) Joint university training for the operation and maintenance of a rabbit farm undertaken by an Afri-Can Connection intern in Accra, Ghana.

Presently:

i) Project coordinator is implementing a tutoring program to assist secondary school students that will improve performance on the National entrance examinations for highschool admittance.

ii) A sports/recreational program targeted at primary and secondary school students in order to promote healthy living, exercise, team cooperation and competitiveness.
