@homfencing The 5th valve (and "6th"... the little compensating lever) are used to make it easier to play in "off" keys. It also helps bring clarity to the pedal range of the tuba, which becomes notoriously out of tune when played aggressively.

The word "Epic" is often far overused, but this is one of those times that it is truly applicable. Not only in length, but breadth and commanding presence, this song is truly an epic. You can't beat an incredible vocalist backed by an incredible orchestra.

Right around 4:42, I'm not totally sold on the "revision" of the 1st trumpet. I've always found that the sustained High Bb that is written has much more power, towering over the band. (Very well illustrated in the Eastman Wind Ensemble recording, same arranger but conducted by Fred Fennell)

@Andrew1996horns ... as for the "Limitations" of the conventional piston trumpet... I play a custom short-stroke Conn, I can blaze through pretty quick. Take a look for Rafael Mendez playing, well... anything. Its not the horn, its the wind-source behind it.
