I spent years 7 through 40 as a fundamentalist christian with some heavy involvement in outreach for probably 10 of them. Throughout that time, I always had doubts, but felt they could be overcome. Among my most fervent prayers was for faith and/or for these doubts to be removed--for god to reveal himself to me in a way that I could understand.

After moving into another strong interest I drifted away from my christian friends but still held on to belief in miraculous creation, doubting evolution as I'd been told to. I kept my subscription to "Answers" from Answers in Genesis.

Then, while on a trip in Feb 2009, I was challenged by a science-minded friend to actually look at the evidence on evolution as it pertained to my intelligent-design arguments. What I found was nothing short of amazing.

The evidence for evolution made it clear that I'd been hoodwinked--Intellectually duped into believing something that is embarrassingly unscientific. The reason why evolution and atheism go so hand-in-hand is that many evangelicals hang their hat on the falsity of evolution. But I discovered that the evidence for evolution is as strong as the evidence is for germ theory, for gravity, and many other well supported theories. Essentially ALL biologists accept evolution like they accept newton's gravity. They aren't "Darwinists" any more than mechanical scientists are "Newtonians."

And when I looked at an issue of "Answers" with a more critical eye, this statement made it all clear: "First, when talking with atheists don't let them take your number one resource, the bible."

Ahh, so indeed it's not the evidence that supports ID, it's belief in an ancient religious text. Now it makes sense.

Learning about reality without the dark tinged "god glasses" has been one of the most refreshing experiences of my life. Our world, and the life within, is an amazing place--and what we can know about it through the scientific method is inspiring. And so much more satisfying than being duped by the simpleton retort of religion: "god done it."
