IllinoisOutage.com: Inland Hurricane 05/08/09
On May 8, 2009, an Inland Hurricane hammered Southern Illinois leaving major damage in at least six counties and nearly 70,000 homes and business without power.
Ameren Illinois' workforce, which peaked at 2,200 field and support personnel, worked 16-18 hour shifts for nearly seven days and used 1,500 utility poles, about 150 miles of electric wire, 21,000 insulators, 110 transformers and 340,000 other items to replace or repair damaged equipment and facilities.
Ameren Illinois opened five temporary customer service centers so customers could report issues and receive updated information. In addition, the Ameren Illinois Utilities mobilized more than 1,200 pieces of equipment, including line trucks, bucket trucks, backhoes, bulldozers and even helicopters and boats to restore power.
