You don't have to press the 'function' key when you want to type numbers. Just hold the button a bit longer and it does it automatically. Or, you can use the 'arrow/shift' button to toggle to numeric and it will automatically enter numbers. You would have to do this on, say, a Blackberry, iPhone ...
