For the modern European or American the question of meaning and purpose of life has long since lost all its practical importance. Although in both the Islam and Western civilisation there is agreement that man is destined to rule over the earth and its creatures, yet there is a difference between the Islamic and Western viewpoints over the heart and soul of man and the definition of human progress.

Islam does not view that human soul as something which is materially evolving, however, it does recognise the potential and possibility of refining the human soul through the grossness of this material world and the tests but we are all subjected to.
