Hello, my name is Gideon (Glen) McGuire Augier, I am a former criminal, I do not make excuses for my actions. I have paid for my crimes and have been crime-free for over ten years.

When I was a criminal my crimes were driven by purpose. My purpose was to feed my addiction. At the time I had no thought or feeling of the effects of my crimes on the community I lived in or society as a whole. My addiction was gambling. Many people in society generally do not understand the power that addictions, whether drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc, can have over an individual. While all addictions are generated by choices, the first choice may be the worst mistake of a person's life as was mine making the first choice to gamble. My first choice led to choices to gamble again to get that thrill that I got the first time. Soon I had trouble staying away from it. I ran out of money from the jobs I had and sought crime to fund my habit.

I broke my addiction with the help of my mother and dedication to God in May of 2000. I worked at it one day at a time and before I knew it a year had gone by without gambling, then two years, three and now over eleven years have gone by without gambling. I had many penalties for my criminal acts which I took responsibility for and made good when I could. As a result of my life experience I understand addicts and the addictions affecting them and their families.

In 2007 I started a Christian Church Ministry called ABBA UNO, which is dedicated to helping the people with addictions. Those families in our community are embarrassed by not having food for their children, proper clothes or a stable environment, all because of the addiction of one, or in some cases, more than one, family member.

On a daily basis I deal with many issues concerning the children and the parent affected by the addictions. While there are many social outlets to help these families, their number is not enough. There are more families needing help than there are facilities. ABBA UNO operates from a building located at 53 Gibson Avenue in Hamilton, Ontario. I see this facility as the first of many that will eventually cover Canada from coast to coast over time. The Church Ministry currently offers a program to counsel those who need it, children and adults. We have offered free community dinners and activities since shortly after the building on Gibson Avenue was acquired.

ABBA UNO is in debt for almost a million dollars to mortgage holders and private loans. The mortgage holders have begun steps to close down ABBA UNO because we are currently behind in our obligations to them. ABBA UNO is a federal non-profit registered entity. There has been no funding provided by the Provincial or Federal governments for ABBA UNO. The funding in the past has been from private donors, as well as some small local businesses. In order to keep ABBA UNO open, the facility has rented out the main room to outside events and has also held its own fund-raisers.

ABBA UNO is important in the community. The circumstances financially are at a desperate level. Outside donations and sponsors are urgently needed to stop the doors from closing forever. If they closed, it would end desperately needed help for the families, especially the children who are the most helpless victims of the situation. They did not choose to have family members with addictions; it was chosen for them by the adults in their life.

Canadians are very generous in helping foreign nations, how about also helping our own? Any donation will be helpful, as all amounts add up. Please help yourself and your community, help ABBA UNO.
