History.
In the summer of 1988, a group of friends decided to come together to organize and enjoy a day "at the beach" on the 4th of July. Every year since, ATB has grown in participants and in scope. It has become the nation's largest recognized gay pride celebration for communities of African descent. ATB is a progressive and socially responsible organization established to create programs committed to excellence, community outreach and quality public service. ATB strives to provide unity celebrations as a networking forum for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender of African descent while increasing awareness in areas such as health and community empowerment.

Contrary to popular belief, the City of Los Angeles is home to over 10,000 Black same-gender loving and transgenders persons. In terms of districts and representation, Black lesbians and gays tend to live in the following districts: the 8th, 9th and 10th. Los Angeles City Council Districts, the 2nd Los Angeles County Supervisor District, the 47th, 48th, 51st, and 52nd Assembly Districts, the 25th and 26th Senatorial Districts, and the 33rd, 35th, and 37th Congressional Districts. The cities of Inglewood, Carson, Compton, and Long Beach are right behind Los Angeles with a growing population of Black lesbians and gays.
