The Andromeda Strain (1971)

Forget the new 2008 A&E mini series remake.... Wormholes, time travel, viruses talking to each other, government conspiracies, medical labs in the dark(not likely. LOL), viruses travelling through the plains/grass faster than an Olympic runner, cardboard acting, terrible soundtrack(rock music? LOL.), and dumbed down for a TV audience... Oh, and the 2 sexy transsexual bisexual aliens(don't ask, don't tell).... Ooops... Sorry, they are not in this one.... My mistake... But I'm sure the producers thought about putting them in to boost ratings.. Damn those TV censors!!! LOL..

Come on.. Get real.... None of this was in the book and a lot of it is just plain crap added to hype up the original story that didn't need any help.... Certainly it's ok to update the technology in a remake but they should have spent more time on improving the acting and storyline and relied less on special effects and political correctness. There just is no feeling of realism or believability in the new version... Maybe a better remake in 2018? LOL. Let's hope so. Oh well... Until then, here is the best version of the book so far...

The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists(Arthur Hill, David Wayne, James Olson, Kate Reid and Paula Kelly) racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions. It's all very fascinating if you're interested in scientific method and technological advances but it's more effective as a thriller in which tension is derived not only from the deadly threat of the virus, but from the escalating fear and anxiety among the small group of people who've been assigned to save the human race. The basic premise is still captivating; it's easy to see how this became the foundation of Crichton's science-thriller empire.

When Michael Crichton wrote the book this film is based on it was a critical success (way before I was born!!). When I read it I found it to be highly technical, tedious and hard to follow. The film cleared all of that up and was very engaging. The content in this film was very much a real concern in the early 1970s as trips to the moon had begun on a regular basis and the possibility of bringing back some mysterious bad thing was a real worry for the lay person. Andromeda Strain is a very realistic sci-fi film, the plot, the conflict, the actors (not very attractive, convicingly real) and one of the first films to explore conspiracies, really makes you question the government's dark agenda!

What a truly wonderful feature film, thank you Robert Wise and Michael Chrichton (R.I.P.) for your work! I urge you, explore this film, made even more pertinent with whats going on even today in the complex world of man-made biological hybrid weapons and all these strange new emergent viral pandemics, this film really makes you read between the lines (or do I mean the lies?) Thanks to AStrainMov sharing this with us, you have no excuses! :D
