You forgot one important detail when you begin. First wet the back of the reed to stick it as it were to the mouthpiece table. It helps keeping the reed in its place.
In order to use it for the bass clarinet just tie two clarinet strings together and there you are!

The pictures do not match this recording at all. This is the BG European tour in 1972 with Zoot Zims, the Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander and Bucky Pizarelli (guitar). I think it was recorded in Copenhagen.
