This interview with Mary Wareham, coordinator of the Aotearoa New Zealand Cluster Munition Coalition, was shot in July 2008, a month after 107 governments successfully negotiated the new international treaty banning cluster bombs was adopted. Wareham discusses the diplomacy at the tense Dublin negotiations of the treaty, including New Zealand's central role, and also talks about civil society's strong engagement. She explains the main articles of the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions and discusses next steps, namely the need for governments to join the treaty, when it is opened for signature in Oslo, Norway in December 2008. By January 2009, a total of 95 governments had signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, of which 4 had ratified. The treaty is now available for signature and ratification at the United Nations in New York.
