The Access to Media Education Society (AMES) is a registered charity (est. 1996) dedicated to using the media arts to support youth-led community development, encourage peer-based expression and education and promote social change. Our programs give communities that have been marginalized--whether through age, race, gender, ethnicity, class, ability, and/or sexual orientation--with the tools to represent their own stories.
In the fall of 1997 AMES ran a ground-breaking series of week-long media intensives targeting Aboriginal, Street involved, of-colour, LGBT, and HIV+ youth. Each session saw 18 youth from these communities gathering together to work with accomplished filmmakers to get the skills create images that would help to counter harmful stereotypes about their cultures and communities. This was the beginning of over a decade of facilitating the creation of new media works that use digital storytelling to give voice, create change and enhance understanding. Since 1997 over 450 multi-barriered youth have participated in our programs and created over 250 new works and 5 educational resource packages currently being used to challenge discrimination and promote diversity and inclusivity in BC schools.
