One of William's best songs, although not a chart topper. He does a great rendition of the song, and makes it seem real. BUT for all of those surmising about William's meaning in the lyrics, he did not write this song. It was written by veteran C&W song writers, Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds.

The acoustical music in this version makes it by far the best, and the video is beautiful, BUT, the video does not capture the nuances and images of the song.

Guthrie really puts a "Dylan spin" on this version with his phrasing. I like it, but like his original '72 version better, and also Goodman's(writer), Nelson & Cash's versions. Great, great modern folk song.

Better go back to grade school. This song did not originate with Vega but is 105 years old. Folk singers & also kids sung it in elementary school for decades before even Vega's parents were born.

This version has the original music (which is very similar to the Christain church hymn, Lilly of the Valley. Most versions have music which was popularized in later movies and by Mitch Miller.

This is not an original with this guy. Words and music were written by Bobby Edwards, Mildred Imes, Fred Henley & Terry Fell around 1960 or 61 & Edwards made a hit recording with it in 1961 both in Pop & C&W.
