Ricky Nelson - I Need You - 1964 -Slide Show
A great ballad recorded around the mid 60's, but never released, until recently, and it's much different from the 1962 version.

One of William's best songs, although not a chart topper. He does a great rendition of the song, and makes it seem real. BUT for all of those surmising about William's meaning in the lyrics, he did not write this song. It was written by veteran C&W song writers, Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds.

yvettemontoya1234 Doesn't matter that the Drifters did this one first. Their version was GREAT, BUT so is this one, and they were almost a decade apart. Jay & The Americans had one of the greatest singers from back then, Jay Black, and another who was almost as good, Kenny Vance. And The Dri...

The acoustical music in this version makes it by far the best, and the video is beautiful, BUT, the video does not capture the nuances and images of the song.

Guthrie really puts a "Dylan spin" on this version with his phrasing. I like it, but like his original '72 version better, and also Goodman's(writer), Nelson & Cash's versions. Great, great modern folk song.

@Eochaid1297 You are very correct. The tune to this song is of Irish origin & named "The Bard of Armaugh". The immigrants who settled this country brought with them a version called "The Unfortunate Rake". When the Cowboy words were added, it was first entitled, "The Cowboy's Lament". Lots, ...

Better go back to grade school. This song did not originate with Vega but is 105 years old. Folk singers & also kids sung it in elementary school for decades before even Vega's parents were born.

Are you sure the title of this song is "I Need You". Rick Nelson had another song titled, "I Need You", which was released on the flip side of It's Up To You in 1962. It reached #83 on the top 100, and the A side was a top 10. This is not another version of that song, but an entirely differen...
