Music:
The music for me that epitomized the whole era of space exploration in the early 1960s-- and the excitement of space travel was a recording of Telstar by the British band, The Tornados in 1962.
Books:
Sir Arthur C. Clark's, 2001: A Space Odyssey. This book greatly influenced what I have accomplished in my career at NASA. I first read 2001 shortly after the movie was released (1968). I read the book during PE class in junior high school. Yes, other kids played ball, I was lost in space. The sixties was a time of wonder as to where space exploration would have civilization at the turn of the 21st century. And, I wanted to be part of that future. Unfortunately, the reality of where we were in space in the real year 2001 did not quite match where Sir Arthur Clark had envisioned where we would be in space when he wrote his novel 35 years before. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that our destiny still remain the stars from whence we came. It will just take us longer to achieve where we were suppose to be in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
