@glowgolfer This is one of those situations where you have to know all the facts of the situation before you can make a ruling. Read the Exception to Rule 24-2b, Relief from Immovable Obstruction and you will see that you cannot claim relief if the interference by an immovable obstruction would o...

@andersmic This is hard to describe without a diagram, but remember that the player must drop the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. This means that the imaginary arc in which the player may drop their ball will be at an angle running approximately so...

@LRP6 This was removed from Rule 24-2b in 2000. It was replaced by Note 3: "The Committee may make a Local Rule stating that the player must determine the nearest point of relief without crossing over, through or under the obstruction."

I am surprised that no-one has mentioned that CBS Sports (and most of the author's comments below) have got the applicable Rule wrong. The available relief was not under Rule 25-1, Abnormal Ground Condition, but Rule 24-2, Immovable Obstruction. If the player states that he could hit the sprinkle...

@fcdiaz1 Of course you incur a penalty if you deem your ball unplayable. Otherwise players would use this option every time they had a lie that they did not fancy. Check my video again at 30 seconds, or better still read Rule 28, one of the shortest Rules in the book.

      Slattedj,

That's why there are three options for an unplayable ball, Rule 28. If you cannot drop within two clublengths, or on the line from the flagstick through the ball where the ball lies, then you have to go back to where you made your last stroke from, under penalty of one stroke.

@Ninjaw78 The best option will vary with the circumstances. In most cases the best option in taking relief from a lateral water hazard may be to drop a ball within two clublengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, not nearer the hole. Otherwise, the player will be...
