If you really want the valveking to sound good. change the speakers. get celestions or carvin GT-12 speakers, I put the head on my marshall cab to try it with celestions and it was a whole different metal monster.. sounded awesome..without pedals..

Back in the late 80's I had the x100 b half stack. It would eat a marshall JCM 900 and Now I own a Jcm 2000. and it cant touch a carvin ..not even close without a pedal. Yes you can do metal with it by scooping the mids. GREAT AMP...also the V3 is great too..
