Dancing Queen - ABBA was one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music. This act was at the wedding of Charles and Silvia Gustaff . The Swedish pop music group topped the charts worldwide from 1972 until it broke up in 1982. ABBA has never officially announced the end of the group, but they have long been considered as dissolved. ABBA sold nearly 370 million records worldwide. ABBA was formed in Sweden by Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida, born 15 November 1945), Björn Ulvaeus (born 25 April 1945), Benny Andersson, born 16 December 1946, (the "B-boys") and Agnetha Fältskog (Anna, born 5 April 1950), or the two married couples (Ulvaeus-Fältskog, and Andersson-Lyngstad). They still sell two to three million records a year. "Muriel's Wedding," "The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert," and musical plays/movies " Mamma Mia!" revived interest in the group.
Before forming ABBA, the four worked as solo singers for a number of years. Their first song as foursome: "People Need Love" was released in June 1972 when the privately adopted "ABBA" as the group name, using their first name initials as acronym. "Abba" means father or dad in Aramaic, Urdu and Hebrew languages. "Waterloo" in 1974 was ABBA's first number one single in big markets such as the UK, Germany, Australia, and even in the USA. ABBA went on to release "SOS," "Mamma Mia," "Fernando," "Money Money Money," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," and "Dancing Queen". With over seven superhits under their belt by January 1977, ABBA started their concert tours going to many cities in Europe, and Australia. After the tour ABBA released "The Name of the Game" and "Take a Chance on Me".
On 09 January 1979, the group performed "Chiquitita" at the Music for UNICEF Concert held at the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate UNICEF's Year of the Child. ABBA donated the copyright of this worldwide hit to the UNICEF. The song reached #1 in ten countries. Later in 1979 and 1980, ABBA undertook more concert tours in Canada, the USA, Europe and Japan. They released another album: "Super Trouper" in 1980, followed by "The Visitors," ABBA's eighth and final studio album as a group in 1981. Their last few songs: "When All Is Said and Done," "The Winner Takes It All" and "One of Us", optimistically, perhaps, reflects the painful, even trauma experience of separating from a partnership lasting some ten years, and restarted their solo careers on and off the stage.
ABBA released 73 singles, some 73 audio and video albums, two Spanish compilations, and six DVDs. They is set to be inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday 15 March 2010.
