About 911911movie
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 - NEW YORK CITY. SEPTEMBER 11, 1973 - SANTIAGO. The terrorist attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York forever scarred the trust of the American people. On the same date, 28 years before, the military overthrow of Chilean President Salvador Allende ushered in 17 years of autocratic rule under Augusto Pinochet, resulting in the deaths of more than 3,000 people and the torture of tens of thousands. In the dark and compelling animated short film 9-11/9-11, conceptual artist Mel Chin creates a tale of two cities... a tragedy of two times. A story of love and hope wrecked by overt and covert manipulations of power. American filmmaker Chip Schneider produced and edited. The animation was done by hand, in pencil, by Chilean animation studio Planovisual. In February 2008, the Chilean Arts and Cultural Council honored 9-11/9-11 with the Sienna Award - the "Oscar" of Chile - for Best Animated Short Film.

About 9-11/9-11, Roger Ebert writes, "What a sad, angry, beautiful film. I was spellbound." 9-11/9-11 premiered on September 11, 2007 with simultaneous screenings in Santiago de Chile and the four largest cities in the US --New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Ann W. Harithas and Creative Time, Inc. are Executive Producers. 9-11/9-11 is presently screening at film festivals around the world. It is difficult to deal with realities as harsh as the terrorist attacks in the US on 9/11/2001 or the military coup in Chile on 9/11/1973. The effects of both tragedies continue even now. Unfortunately, many Americans do not even know where the country of Chile is, and find it hard to believe that the United States supported a military coup there, leading to the death of a democratically elected president, the beginning of a dictatorship, the execution of thousands, and widespread torture. It is the artist's job to create a set of conditions such that a moment of empathy or reflection can occur. 9-11/9-11 is intended to provoke your curiosity and to encourage discourse. The nationalism that usually colors the discussion of these tragedies hides the simple humanity that ties us together.
