Hey. I'm a Civil War Buff. I have ancestors that fought in the 83rd NY, and the Irish Brigade. Tom, the one in the 83rd, was wounded at the Wilderness, and died of scurvy at ANDERSONVILLE. The Irish one was killed at Maryes Heights at Fredricksburg, VA.

"The Vesle"

There's a place in history for Chateau Theierry.
The American drive was big and grand.
The Huns fell back to the river Vesle.
And upon a hill there made a stand.
The Seventy Seventh took the feild
At an active Sector; our first chance.
We drove them back beyond the Aisne
Another victory won for France.

Twas no easy task, I'll tell you
Fighting the Hun where they took their stand.
They on a mountain, we on a plain
and the River Vesle in "No Mans Land"
For fifteen days they took our fire.
But the toll as well.
For the River Vesle was the deadline
And many hero fell.

I'll never forget one evening,
The Boche had advanced our way
we fought until our guns were near bursting,
Our infantry saved the day.
We lost some brave comrades that evening,
As all kinds of burst lit the sky.
Twould have been no disgrace to leave the guns,
But the heroes would stay here or die.

We read all the papers next morning,
Eager to know what was said,
To console the sweethearts and the mothers
Of all our boys who were dead.
