One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scenes he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "my precious, precious child. I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering. When you see only one set of footprint, it was then I carried you."

ある夜、わたしは夢を見た。わたしは、主とともに、なぎさを歩いていた。暗い夜空に、これまでのわたしの人生が映し出された。どの光景にも、砂の上にふたりのあしあとが残されていた。ひとつはわたしのあしあと、もう一つは主のあしあとであった。

これまでの人生の最後の光景が映し出されたとき、わたしは、砂の上のあしあとに目を留めた。そこには一つのあしあとしかなかった。わたしの人生でいちばんつらく、悲しい時だった。

このことがいつもわたしの心を乱していたので、わたしはその悩みについて主にお尋ねした。「主よ。わたしがあなたに従うと決心したとき、あなたは、すべての道において、わたしとともに歩み、わたしと語り合ってくださると約束されました。それなのに、わたしの人生のいちばんつらい時、ひとりのあしあとしかなかったのです。いちばんあなたを必要としたときに、あなたが、なぜ、わたしを捨てられたのか、わたしにはわかりません。」

主は、ささやかれた。「わたしの大切な子よ。わたしは、あなたを愛している。あなたを決して捨てたりはしない。ましてや、苦しみや試みの時に。あしあとがひとつだったとき、わたしはあなたを背負って歩いていた。」
