None of the Smells like Team Spirit Intro instructional videos I've watched reference the G grace note slide (actually a power chord) before each G# in the intro riff. Could this be open D and G notes bleeding in while making the leap from Bb to G# or is Kurt actually adding a quick G power chord ?

Best way to do that would be in Performance Mode where you could enable 2 patches at once via Edit/Perform/Part. The 1st would be your favorite bass patch and 2nd patch would be the other instrument. Be sure to enable the Local switch for the 2 patches chosen via Edit/Perform/Mid...
