That depends, do you already have the car? A running convertible can cost between 10,000 and 12,000 dollars, and that's not even considering the money that you plan on putting into it.

I'm thinking about doing this with my straight six. How much did it cost you altogther? How much did it improve? and what exactly did it improve on (performance, driveability, economy?)

Definitely upgrade to split headers for great torque and sound. Clifford makes headers that split into dual exhaust. That, along with a set of Flowmasters will make your car sound like a V8.

A little late for a reply, but a top of the line (new paint, new interior, no rust, perfect) 6 cylinder coupe will run about 11k-13k. One with a perfect motor with a mediocre body will run around 5k.

Usually, 6 cylinder coupes cost around 1.5k less than their V8 counterparts.

floorboards look better than most with that amount of surface rust. The question is exactly HOW MUCH of that is surface rust and how much is body rust.

since when are Mustangs muscle cars? They weren't marketed as muscle cars. They were originally sold to compete with European cars. Even the small 289 V8s aren't that fast.

Keep it a 6 cyl and replace whatever parts the engine needs. It simply isn't worth it to put a V8 in it. Not only do you have to buy a completely new engine, but you also have to change a lot of other parts on the car in order for it to be compatible.

Uh no, only Shelbys, (which were top of the line) were rated right at at 300 hp. The other engine options had 120 hp, 200, 225, and 271...

It wasn't until 1969 that mustangs actually turned into a muscle car with the 428 Cobra Jet pushing out 400+ hp. That thing would kill a mopar......

I just put split headers and duel exhaust on my m 66 6 banger, and it sounds great. We have a friend who kept telling us to put a V8 in it and get rid of the 6 cyl. As soon as we did that he said he was impressed.
