I'm not sure how to describe it. I think the best example is Nelson Mandela, if you read his autobiography you'll get a picture of what I mean. When he was in prison although his outward freedom was taken away from him nobody could take away his inward freedom.

Some forms of repression, (and i don't mean abuse) can give a sense of inward liberation. And some forms of outward liberation give way to inward repression.
