Helpers, or slaves... are usually placed mid-train... a DPU, or Dedicated Pusher Unit...are usually stationed at certain points along the route on which the train may need a push up a hill, these DPU's just couple to the end of the train and give it a push...

I grew up watching that very same unit doing yard duty... i wonder if its still alive...that gp-9 is like music to my ears, it puts me to sleep as i grew up not far from the yard...
