The Sulzer V12 12LVA24 engines (2650hp @ 1050rpm) once fitted in these locos were also fitted experimentally to five BR Class 47s (D1702-1706). However, these 47s were re-engined during 1969-70 with the standard Sulzer 'twin bank' 12LDA28C. 'Kestrel' had the V16 variant.

Absolutely lovely. I used to live in Basingstoke and watched trains at Worting Junction. I waited for 'Thumpers' and for Class 50s. If the wind was right, you could here a 50 leaving Basingstoke station. But 'Thumpers' gave you plenty of notice they were approaching too. Thanks for this vdeo.

@24nov67 It's a GM V12 645E3C (2700hp at 954rpm). The only 47 to have an EE engine was 47046. Used to test the class 56's GEC 16RK3CT (an updated derivative of the Class 50's EE 16CSVT), it became 47601 and then 47901 when the class 58's GEC 12RK3ACT was installed for testing. Apart from that one...

@456013matt It had the same Paxman 'Valenta' 12RP200L 79-litre V12 engines (2250hp at 1500rpm) that the production HSTs were built with. The first VP185 was used by 43170 from September 1994. These ran alongside the original Valenta engines until 2005-2009, when they were all replaced by the MTU ...

@grannyjone Similar. The 59s sound slightly deeper under full power with their V16 engine, compared to the V12 in a 66. But, on idle, they can't really be told apart and both are very quiet when compared to 56s

Apparently, according to Welch's biography, Yes had a bit of a fight with the record company who wanted to release it with its catalogue number 90104. They demanded it to be released as 90125. They got their way...and what an album it is.

@formidable38 Yes. I heard the same thing; 47s couldn't match 50s on timings. There was an article in Rail magazine many years ago that said the class 50s could outperform any other type 4 on passenger trains. I also heard they could outperform even the Deltics up to 60mph.

Yes, I think whereas the Valentas gave good all-round entertainment, the V16 bass of the MTUs sound very very good at high speed and seem to carry for miles.
