Because...
Remarkably, mankind is evolving. Not in a way associated with Darwin, but in another way. We have learned so much about other people-- how we are different but simultaneously similar-- it makes intolerance totally ignorant.
I think it is because the world used to be large...so large that people could stay within their communities and never even be cognizant that there were others who were different from them --but now... the world is smaller. Not geographically, but because of the advances of devices of the last 100 years or so ( notably the Internet, telephone, photo camera, and transportation means), those people who could not be imagined are now our neighbors. Their needs, contributions, weaknesses, and strengths no longer can be disregarded or counted invalid.
Could it be that it was all for nothing? God forbid! Some have died. Indeed, blood has been spillled in deliberate sacrifice and martyrdom for the sake of humanity-- in every nation, in every culture, in every marked period of time, and for every cause...aye - for EVERY cause.
Thus, abiding various Intolerances and unjust and skewed biases is a backwards degenerating way of thinking. To thine ownself be true (Shakespeare), but love your neighbor as you love yourself (Jesus Christ).
