Volvo 850s, or certainly once in the UK didn't come with DSTC / ESP etc all it came with was Traction Control and not a very advanced version compared to new cars (I own a 850).

Not really a fair race as they are two totally different cars.

The lighter car will easily pull ahead untill you get to about 80mph and then it's like it's hit a wall where as the Volvo keeps on pulling. By the time you're going past you're doing over 100 to their 90-ish.

I used to love my dad's 2.8 XR4x4, great for winding up BMW drivers. It did apparently have a bit of a tandancy to bite if you pushed it too far, my mother once came back with it totally covered in mud bar where there wipers had cleared the windscreen. I just wish I'd had a chance to drive it.

Personally I think that there should be a maximum number of times you are allowed to take your test. Also iirc in Germany you are not allowed out unless with a proper instructor in a dual control car which sounds like a very good idea.

I think it was more boost for 15 seconds was the main difference giving a bhp difference of about 15bhp under full boost.

Though iirc bigger brakes, uprated suspension and a different interior were also fitted to the R/T5R over the T5.

Apart from the 4x4 AWD (v.rare) all 850s are front wheel drive. The 850 was iirc the first ever fwd Volvo.

Also afaik all petrol (as apposed to tdi diesel) turbocharged 850s are 2.3 as Volvo had to decrease the cylinder size to cope with the extra heat caused by greater performa...

That guy must own a tyre shop or something. I'm lucky to get 5000 miles out of my front tyres on a standard 850t5 and they're about £100 a corner.

Really wish I'd bought a 855 instead of my 854 - nothing says acceleration like a dog squashed against the tailgate window.
